Mankind as well as the animals and plants have been directly affected by ecological disasters, that are often caused, by man himself.

On June 5, 1972 the Conference of the United Nations on the Human Environment was inaugurated. In this event the foundations for the establishment of the Program of the United Nations United for the Environment were laid (PNUMA). Twenty years later, in June 1992, the General Assembly summoned the Conference of the United Nations United on the Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro 1992), where representatives of the governments met with the intent of making the necessary decisions to carry out the objectives of the Conference of Stockholm and to assume the commitment to reach a viable and equitable balance between the environment and the development, as well as a sustainable future for the Earth and those who live in it.

The Environment World Day celebrated the 5th of June of every year, has to do with you, me and all our surroundings. The World Day of the Environment is one of the main vehicles by which the United Nations stimulates the world wide importance concerning the environment and intensifies the attention and the political action. The subject of the World-Day of the Environment in 2001, "Connect to the Chain of Life" reflects the necessity to connect each one of us, to all possible forms of life in our planet. That connection can be made by means of the instruments that modern technology offers, or through traditional methods, always reuniting to efforts with other people and organizations. The World-wide Day of the Environment is an excellent opportunity to translate that connection in action.

This day is an event of people and organizations with multicolored activities, like concentrations in the ecological streets, concerts, tests and competitions of posters in the schools, planting of trees, campaigns of recycled and cleaning. The World-wide Day of the Environment is also a multimedia event that inspires thousands of journalists to write and to make enthusiastic news articles and to criticize about the environment. It is a visual event with documentary televising, photographic and unfolded exhibitions, as well as an intellectual event for which they organize and they participate in seminars, round tables and conferences. In many countries this celebration offers an opportunity to sign or to ratify international treaties and, some times, leads to the establishment of permanent governmental structures related to the environmental handling and the economic planning.

To perceive the Earth as our home, the integral place whose fortune and whose future is ours, is the first serious essential step to its survival. The World Day of the Environment is a call to the conscience, and a call to action. In this day, let us be illuminated not solely by the benefit of our own life but also for the well-being of the generations to come. The crisis of the environment is unforgiving. Actions is needed now.
